Greenbelt Outbuilding and Annex, Essex

Project Specifics

House/Residential Extensions, New Housing

Situated within the Greenbelt, this bespoke outbuilding project was carefully crafted to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings while meeting the client’s practical needs. Designed as a multi-functional space, the building includes a double garage, garden room, gym, storage area, and a shower room, all positioned thoughtfully to the side of the client’s garden.

Complying with Permitted Development rules, the outbuilding provides both aesthetic value and functionality.

Designed within the parameters of Permitted Development, this outbuilding is set 2 meters from the side boundary, stands no taller than 4 meters, and occupies less than 50% of the land area.

With a focus on visual continuity, the outbuilding features a brick plinth with white timber weatherboarding, echoing the style of the main house—an important design consideration for the client. The roof tiles were also chosen to match those of the main house, creating a cohesive aesthetic between the two structures.

The roof over the summer house is a distinctive cut roof, complemented by three exposed oak feature beams that span the vaulted ceiling. This feature was suggested by our us to bring a warm, cottage-like feel to the interior space.

Our client’s long-term vision for the outbuilding was central to its design. After 10 years the client is considering the possibility of converting this into an independent dwelling. With this in mind, careful thought was given to the building’s location and orientation to facilitate a seamless transition to future use. Our team ensured the outbuilding is well-positioned in the case of conversion, providing the flexibility and return on investment.

This Greenbelt outbuilding stands as a testament to thoughtful design and meticulous planning. It is functionality equipped, aesthetically pleasing and all with future potential.
