Biodiversity: Protecting Our Future

2023-06-13 12:18:51

Over the last 10 years, the UK has seen a significant rise in political focus on the environmental impact that building and development can cause.

The increase in housing is proven to have a powerful effect on the natural habitats of our wildlife, this has now been identified as one of the most important reasons behind the drive in biodiversity.

At the end of 2018, the UK government set out legislation that required developers to ensure habitats for wildlife were enhanced and left in a measurably better state than they were pre-development as a way to retain, protect and increase natural living species.

Our 27-year relationship with Essex Wildlife Trust supports our ethos to recognise the importance of including design options that enhance habitats and ecosystems in response to the urgent demand for biodiversity, sustaining and increasing natural wildlife.

MP Architects LLP has a team of highly experienced Architects that work with qualified Ecologists like Peter Harris at T4 Ecology.  Together we are dedicated to finding ways to incorporate spaces for wildlife to thrive in our design and build techniques.

Our design approach supports the natural rise in threatened species by protecting and restoring ecosystems like hedgerows, water features and woodland areas. This attitude leads to securing habitat enhancements during and after a build process.  We will always endeavour to leave a natural environment better with more opportunities to thrive than it was before.

In the case that this is not possible, we take into consideration the Biodiversity offsetting model, a building industry tool that enables the off-site creation, restoration, or enhancement of habitats as compensation for habitat and species loss resulting from development.

We recognise that this is a team effort for Architects, Ecologists, and Landscape Architects to protect the future of tomorrow that starts today.
